Saxon Peterborough

Get Ready To Rock with Hereward Radio, as the mighty Saxon team up with Excalibur for five pounds worth of Friday night fun in Peterborough.

Who’d have thought that nineteen years down the line, that Saxon would be back playing proper sized, packed out venues, eh? It didn’t look like it down Peterborough way in 1990. I was there, by the way, as in them days you could get on the sleeper back up to Embra about half past midnight in Peterborough, chug along for twenty minutes, then stop in a siding in Watford for about three hours.

I was very, very drunk, and may have done my bit to live down to the internationtal stereotypical Scotchman. Saxon didn’t seem very happy either, as they bludgeoned their way through a half heartet set to a half empty room of pissed nonces. I’m glad they’ve dragged themselves back up the ladder, as they were the first heavy metal band I ever saw, supporting Motorhead at the Edinburgh Odeon in nineteen mumblety mumble. And they still rocked a couple of months ago at the ABC in Glasgow, despite Doro making a brave effort to steal their heavy metal thunder.

Enjoy.

MP3 one – Live To Rock
MP3 two – Stallions Of the Highway

And my favourite ever Saxon track

MP3 three – Mr Hs favourite ever Saxon track

There are a gazillion best of albums, but this is a triple album for under a fiver. Buy it here.

Here’s Saxon with Lemmy (Motorhead), Angry Anderson (Rose Tattoo) and Andi Deris from Helloween.

First time I saw Saxon play was back in 1980 on the Strong Arm of the Law tour, Limelight (a Rushesque outfit) were supporting. Very good choice for a favourite Saxon track by the way

I am renowned for my impeccable taste in music, facial hair and large collection of pizza boxes.

Did Limelight ever release anything? A friend of mine saw them when they supported Chevy during their tour of the Highlands (Oh Yes). Would have been 81 or 82 or so.

There’s a picture of them in an old Kerrang! I have. I think a double-necked Rickenbacker is involved, so, yes “Rushesque” sounds appropriate.

Limelight released a surprising amount of material considering they were pants, although I did have a soft spot for 7″ debut ‘Metal Man’. I seem to recall the two main blokes were brothers and came from Mansfield. They issued an album, which was rereleased by Avatar (home to Chevy), another single and a second album on Mausoleum.

And Thumper, just for you, Wick Assembly Rooms 23 July, 1981.

The night after Aberdeen Victoria Hotel and the night before I saw them at Grangemouth Town Hall. Them were the days.

And when a man can tell you which day Chevy and Limelight played Wick Assembly Rooms in 1981, it just illustrates there can be nothing, I said nothing, he doesn’t know about the NWOBHM.

Look upon ye mighty and fear.

Thumper/Mr. H – Now hear this…I actually attended that Wick gig!
I remember the day well (which is surprising as my memory is normally shite), I was working at the US Navy base at Forss that afternoon before getting through to ‘Week’ for the evening’s entertainment
